FROM THE VICAR

Dear Friends,

The wedding bells seem to be ringing over our parishes even more often than usual this year. We have fifteen weddings – up from 12 last year. Although the number is not huge, in all my 27 years as a priest I don’t remember ever taking so many wedding services in a year.

The statistics show that fewer and fewer people are getting married in church: all I can say is that no-one seems to have told this to the couples round here!

No doubt one reason for the popularity of marriage in our parishes is the beauty and antiquity of our four churches. People do like a `traditional church’ as a setting for their wedding, and I have many requests from couples who live outside the parishes who want to get married here. Sadly, most of these requests have to be refused because the law says you can get married only in the church in the parish where you live, or where you attend regularly, unless you have special permission from the Archbishop to get married in a particular church.

Many people say that couples should be allowed to get married in any church they fancy, regardless of where they live. In fact I find that some people think that this is already the law, and they are quite disappointed when I explain that it isn’t – at least not yet.

But there are moves in this direction, and one day that may come. Meanwhile the General Synod of the Church of England has just agreed a change to the rules so that couples can get married in a parish where they have some connection, even if they don’t live in that parish, or attend church there.  We wait to see what this will mean in practice, but it is a welcome step.

Personally, I welcome a change in the rules so that people who were brought up in a parish, or who used to live there, or whose family used to live there, can get married in that church.

But I wouldn’t be so happy with a situation where people could go to any church they chose, even if there were no connection with the parish.  For one thing it could mean an enormous increase of work for those churches whose age and beauty made them popular.

Another reason is that a parish church is not simply a spiritual supermarket providing services for all who want to come and pay for them. A church is a building which is the focus of a Christian ministry to the surrounding parish. This ministry grows through the building up of a relationship between the church community and the families of the parish over a period of time. Where couples simply come to the church for their wedding and then disappear such a relationship cannot grow, and there can be no on-going pastoral care for the couple.

The ministry of our parish churches is to help people discover a faith in God and to grow in that faith.  Marriage can be a wonderful way of discovering God’s love, and it is our privilege to help couples make this discovery, as well as to make their wedding day as enjoyable and memorable as possible.

With best wishes,

Robin Cardwell

Hinton Parva Flower Festival

`A Glimpse through Time’ was the title of the recent Flower Festival at St. Swithun’s, and what a wonderful week it turned out to be!  From the opening event of strawberries and `pink fizz’, through the Festival itself with its marvellous flower arrangements, to a packed Evensong service, where Robert Sanday was the guest preacher, and culminating in a memorable concert on St. Swithun’s Day itself, the organisers did us proud.

The Flower Festival itself raised about a thousand pounds, and this will be split between Prospect Hospice and St. Swithun’s Church.

Our warmest congratulations and thanks to all the Hinton Flower Club, and friends, and especially to Moggs Boon and Angie Alcock who organised it.

The course will run on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays in September.

Wanborough Farmer’s Market

The next farmers' market will be on Saturday 21st August at the Wanborough Show.

Wanborough Village Hall is a major beneficiary, as all the stall fees go straight into its coffers.  Of course there is a commercial side,  but generally it is local people working hard to stay in farming or related food production, and doing a huge amount of environmental good by reducing the 'food miles' associated with many supermarket products.

For more information, call Alison Mills (790284) or Sue Birley

(790438).

Summer News Release

The last year has been incredibly busy for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance which has once again proved to be a great asset for the people of Wiltshire having flown 291 missions during 2003, with a further 93 incidents attended by our fast response car.

The Air Ambulance could not have performed its vital work without the support of the people of Wiltshire. We would like to thank all of you that have supported us over the past year.

Accidents and illnesses often happen where access is difficult and the Air Ambulance overcomes problems of distance or congestion, enabling the life saving skills of the aero medic to be provided where needed. The Air Ambulance can take the seriously injured to the most appropriate treatment centre quickly and safely. It can reach any part of Wiltshire within 15 minutes. Almost half the incidents are road traffic accidents. The others include horse riding accidents, sporting injuries, farm and industrial accidents and fires.

The crew of three (pilot, police observer and aero medic) are on call 19 hours a day (8 a.m. to 3 a.m.) every day of the year. Incidents where life is threatened always take priority.

If you would like further details on the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Appeal, would like to make a donation, or need information on how you can help then please contact us.
